JOURNAL-SUMMER OJT...

On the job training, every summer, junior Psychology students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila is required to have 150 hours of on-the-job training in industrial setting. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect in an on-the-job training, though of course my professors told us some past juniors’ experiences in their on the job training I still wasn’t sure what to experience if I’ll be on the position. Finding a company to apply to is not that difficult but the process of completing the papers and signatories from the school is a bit difficult. Our school required us to be at least of a group of 2 or more in a certain company. There are couple of companies that my friends and I went to, I remember when I had my first interview I was so nervous but I think I delivered well because I know that I prepared for the interview. Before the Holy Week start I finally had a company where I’ll be spending a month as a trainee. The company that I was in is People Depot Inc. an outsourcing and recruitment company located at Makati City.
It’s April 5, the day when I had my first day at people Depot as a trainee. I was actually excited at the same time nervous on the way to People Depot, good thing I know that my friend Cat will be on the same company as me. As I entered People Depot I noticed that the there are only few of them who works in the company but I think the work place is conducive. On my first week I was assigned to the Human Resource Group, the main duties and responsibilities of the group is to source out and recruit candidates for possible employment in one of the company’s client. My first task was to sort out candidates at jobopenings for the Call Center Agent position. I also called up candidates to screen them if they are qualified for the position. I think my first day was good though at first I was like ‘nangangapa’ with what to do with the candidates and what to ask and all. But the people in the company are very much helpful with us and they really expose us in the field of recruitment.

On the next day (April 6), my task was to sort out candidates still at jobopenings for the Industrial Engineer position. I also called up candidates to screen them if they are qualified for the position. The day went well until the air-conditioning system failed. And everyone felt uneasy because of the situation, but I think everyone did function well even though we had that situation.

It’s Wednesday, (April 7) I went to office early with Cat and still the air-conditioning system is not yet working. My task for the day is to sort out candidates for the position of Web Developer then called up candidates to screen them if they are qualify for the position. Then make a profile summary for the qualified candidates.

Thursday (April 8) still the same, I went to office earlier then off to my task for the day which is to sort out candidates for the Data Analyst position then called up candidates to screen them if they are qualify for the position. Then make a profile summary for the qualified candidates.

After my first four days at People Depot I think I’m well adjusted with the workplace, the people in the office and the tasks given to me. My only concern is the air-conditioning system, it’s still not functioning though the office provided us with an industrial fan which is a great help. Other than that I think I had a productive week.

For the second week of my on-the-job training (April 12-16), I was assigned to sort out candidates for the position of Contact Center Agent, Accounting Assistant, Data Analyst and Data Processor. I also had a phone interview with the candidates to screen if they are qualified for the position. Then I also made their profile summary and curriculum vitae formatted. I think I endorsed quite a number of qualified candidates. I think second week is better because now I know what to do with the curriculum vitae and what to ask with the candidates and also I think I already gained confidence in phone interviews with the candidates. Though sometimes there are candidates who are not in a good mood while I’m talking to but most of the candidates that I’ve talked to are very much accommodating and cooperative.

For the third week (April 19-23), Cat and I exchanged tasks. I am now under the Sales and Marketing Group. My task for the whole week is Telemarketing which is a method of direct marketing in which a salesperson solicits to prospective customers to buy services over the phone. There are different companies that I’ve talked to, some of them are large companies and some are not. Some will give their email add or fax and some will not. I’ve also experienced to wait for long because usually an operator will answer the phone and will connect to the HR Department then no one will pick up the phone. I think I did well in telemarketing. Though I must say I am more interested in recruitment and interviews than telemarketing.

For the fourth week (April 26-27) I was assigned to perform telemarketing I also follow-up on the companies that we sent a proposal, some of them are accommodating but some are too busy to read our proposal. On the third day of the week (April 28) Ms. Reine asked me to accompany her at one of our client at Pioneer in Mandaluyong for the vendor event. On the next day (April 29) I was asked to help with the HR Group to screen candidates for the Data Analyst and Accounting Assistant position and I also formatted the candidates’ curriculum vitae.

Overall I think this experience has taught me a lot. Working is never an easy task, I’ve always wonder what will be my career in the future. I have lots of dreams in life that are sometimes impossible to reach. I never taught that with this experience as a trainee will make me realize that everything can be achieved through hard work and perseverance. I must admit that at first I was uneasy and nervous with my on-the-job training because this will be the first time that I’ll be dealing or be a part of the “corporate world”. It’s different when you have the experience first hand. Honestly at first I wasn’t looking forward with my on-the-job training, I mean it’s summer I prefer to rest the whole summer and have a vacation somewhere else. But as days go by I actually getting into the ‘office work’ of course there are times that I feel exhausted and sometimes bored. But I realized that this training is a preparation for my future career and that I am fortunate enough that the company that I’m in is giving me an exposure and experience that will surely be a help for us professionally. I also enjoyed my stay in People Depot because of my friend Cat, I mean she’s always been my ever loyal and trusted friend. And I am so glad that I had this on-the-job training experience with her. As for the people in People Depot, I think they’re all very nice and accommodating. I really learned a lot from them, I admire their passion for their work, I also noticed that they are very much focused with their work. For almost a month of my stay in People Depot as a trainee the experience has taught me a lot of things, not just about the ‘corporate world’ but also in dealing with different personalities. I also gained experience that will surely be a help for me and also I think People Depot is a place where I utilized my knowledge and skills and improve them for my future career. As for me, I think I’ll leave People Depot with a smile and I will surely not forget all the things I’ve learned and the experience I gained when I go back to school as a senior student. This summer has been very productive for me; I really enjoyed my summer because of this experience. Good Luck, Good Love, Summer OJT… now signing off…
